Armed Forces Day Empty Armed Forces Day

Post by Chris_Bowman Sat May 15, 2010 11:27 am

Armed Forces Day is always observed on the 3rd Saturday of May. Let us all salute our brothers and sisters who serve the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines, National Guard and Reserve units.

Thank you for being there, to do your endless jobs, so we may enjoy the safety and comfort of the lives we have in this great land. We may not like everything, but we have the best and much of it is due to your efforts.

Armed Forces Day Empty Re: Armed Forces Day

It was my privilege to participate, as a Big Red One Soldier (1st Battle Group, 28th Infantry), in the first & final Armed Forces Day street parade in West Berlin, in 1963. Prior to that year, Armed Forces Day parades were held at Berlin's Tempelhof Air Base. Beginning in 1964, Allied Forces Day street parades, including British & French occupation troops, were conducted annually on U.S. Armed Forces Day. www.berlin-brigade.de

**** Up until the 60's there used to be a really big Parade on Armed Forces Day in NYC. Half of West Point's Cadets would even march . Sadly it's gone now.

In the 1950s, Colorado Springs always had a big Armed Forces Day beginning with a downtown parade of Camp/Ft. Carson troops, including K-9s & Mule Pack units, as well as Infantry, Armor, Artillery -- all polished, painted & "spiffied-up" for the occasion. Then, folks would migrate to Peterson Air Force Base for a static aircraft display -- visitors could actually get inside old B-25s, etc. It was a good time & a display of real patriotism! Very Happy
