Mean Conservatives

****** One suggestion for those who take the Title of this thread seriously Kindly read Pat Buchanan's tribute/Eulogy to his longtime friend , collegue & mentor Anne Volz Higgins who passed away a few days ago . It's his latest Human Events entry and you can get it thru Drudge.

****** It's almost a "Remembrance of Things Past" moment and it shows possibly where even many Conservatives have wandered in 40 + years. For those who "actually" believe there is no Compassion even among those NOT calling themselves "Compassionate Conservatives" it might be something refreshing . It showed Loyalty above all else over 4 + decades and it exemplifies the true Human Spirit that possibly goes beyong our present almost termninal polarization.

****** Sure , Hard Leftists/Liberals/Progressives certainly defend their own - but mostly it's only while the figure is still in office & has power . After they are gone - either honarably retired or disgraced - well the oportunists look elsewhere. Buchanan & Anne Higgins were loyal to Nixon - and his memory for 44 years and to each other. It's a Good read.

**** Buchanan and Volz Higgins as well as the late William Safire knew Richard Nixon well over many years. They knew his Dark side and his sometimes erupting vanity as well as his temperment . They also KNEW that he was compotent and usually Right on most matters. Possibly they knew that Irony comes into all our lives - even the Greats and Nixon as keen as he was and fully paranoid at times failed c. 1973 to fully appreciate the determination of his Enemies.

***** In short whatever occured in 1971 thru 1974 probably would have occured under almost any leadership given the same circumstances. Only the 4th Estate fully shifting over in a resentful pursuit changed matters and that legacy is still with us.

***** A whole host of contemporary figures from Hillary Clinton to John Kerry to Charles Schumer to Chris Dodd to Frank Lautenberg to Dianne Feinstein DO KNOW that in similair circumstances roughly the same events could have consumed them AND they appreciate the insulation usually given by the MSM.

***** Only fools like Pelosi or Janet Reno really believe it might have been different . Guys like Bobby Kannedy Loved Secrecy,Spying , Backstabbing Dirty Deals & Blackmail. This includes Bribery & Vote buying , but he was and remains an Angel in Some Eyes.

***** we continue to exost almost in a Great National Amnesia which is WHY the past repeats itself and We never really change the process regardless of how corrupt.
